Hi Darnell!

We had some Rhode Island Reds, but an animal killed our hens. We haven't replaced them, yet, but wish to in the near future. I'd like to pick your brain a bit ;) How did you get started? Are there any books you recommend? We're going to build a hen house tractor to house our new hens. We need a solid structure to deter any animals. If you have any ideas or recommendations, please share them with us.

Hi Tina,

I forgot to answer part of your question. TRX means "Total body Resistance eXercise." It's a suspension training system, which uses your body weight as resistance. It gives you a darn good workout and is fun to do.

Hi Tina!

The distances I have listed on my sample workout aren't for beginners. Many people start out running by doing a walk/run type of run. For example, you can start out by walking a few minutes, then running one minute and do that for the duration of your workout. As you progress, shorten your walking time and increase your running time. Eventually you won't need walking intervals between your running intervals, and you'll just be running the entire time.

We're going to post a walking program for those who are interested in speed walking. I'll be posting that shortly. Believe it or not, some speed walkers walk as fast as runners run!

As far as staying motivated, I'm kind of lucky because I just really like to run and have been doing it for many years. It sort of becomes habit. Also, exercise, including running, has benefits on many levels. For example, it helps with sleep, mood, attention/focus, ability to handle stress, etc. After you feel the benefits, it'll help keep you motivated.

Very good! Question- what does trx stand for? Also do you think that for someone like me who has not done any running in the past would want to add a pre speed plan with walking? I an not sure I could even run around the block. Would I add an extra 5 weeks of just long fast walking so say the training time would be around 30 weeks? Or would just skip the walking part and start with running even though it would only be a block at first? What are your thoughts? And how do you stay motivated? Love you!

Hi Max,

Rabbits do indeed have two sets of upper incisors. The second, smaller set, lies behind the top front incisors. Since they are peg-like in shape, they're often referred to as "peg-teeth." They generally don't cause any issues to the rabbit. However, if the peg-teeth seem to be causing problems for your oldest's rabbit, take it to the vet for evaluation.

I thought ear mites were in the ear, not on the back, on the istuode? The folks on the rabbit forum at Homesteading Today think it's ringworm, too.I went to the drugstore and got some athlete's foot spray (fights ringworm), some rubbing alcohol (to clean my hands with after messing with these buns), and some surgical gloves.I've got all the visibly affected ones isolated except for one, the worst one. That one refuses to come near me after I traumatized it with the photo session. So I'm being patient and offering lots of treats. I also plan to get some Vanodine to spray down the colony. There are oral drugs for ringworm, which is attractive because I could treat the entire colony, even those which are asymptomatic, but they cause birth defects so should not be given pregnant or nursing animals. Um, these are rabbits living in a colony. They are ALWAYS pregnant or nursing! Thanks for the commetns, you guys! We'll see how the foot spray works. The directions say to treat for four weeks. That seems like forever.

Hi Leslie,A little late here, but teebtr late than never:I thought ringworm right off the bat myself, but rabbits lick themselves so you would be teebtr off to get a cat preparation that treats ringworm. You can also make a wash using gentian violet. I use a recipe very similar to this:16 oz. bottle isopropyl alcohol 4 tablespoons Boric Acid Powder16 drops Gentian Violet 1% Solution You can get both the boric acid and the gentian violet online, just look around. I keep boric acid on hand for ants just because it's safer than insecticide. It will stain the bunnies' ears purple, but I have a cat who is very prone to ear fungal infections, and it works a treat on her.Gentian violet is also good for jock itch, athletes foot AND ringworm, and if you make the full quantity, you can use it to wash around the cage--again, bearing in mind that it will stain everything purple. For inside the ear, I use a teeny needle-less syringe, fill it up and just squirt it into the ear and rub, just like you would with mite medicine. I wipe out as much as I can with a wad of soft toilet paper then I wait for the cat to shake her head and wipe her ears out again. You could probably apply this with a cotton ball on the external sores, and if it wasn't actually ringworm, it is still a good and reasonably gentle anti-infective/anti-fungal.Since it does stain, wear old clothes--although with 12 cats, knowing whose ears I did is an advantage for me!
